job, a flat and a phone that actually works And, possibly, her old life back Because everyone at home has moved on, her parents have reignited their sex life, she s sleeping in a converted shed and she s got a bad case of nostalgia for the way things wereThen her new phone begins to ping with messages from people she thought were deleted for good Including one number she knows off by heart her ex sSometimes we d all like the chance to see what we ve been missing Ros returns to London from her prestigious job in the US producing a radio show Unfortunately she doesn t return in triumph and is forced to sleep in her parents shed because they have converted her bedroom into a yoga studio for her mother.Ros sends a group email to her entire address book to let them know she is back in the UK and would love to get in touch And who contacts her None other than Patrick, the intellectual travel journalist who broke her heart Is this a chance for Ros to turn Ros returns to London from her travel journalist who broke her heart Is this a chance for Ros to turn back time and get back together with the one that got away, even though her three best friends can t stand him We ve all been there, stuck in a dead end job, single and broke when all our friends have miraculously found a high flying career, bought a house, found a life partner, settled down and moved on Things are especially bad for Ros because they all moved on without her while she was in the US Now her friends have a new hang out swanky bar instead of the old boozer they used to frequent and an annoying new friend, John, owner of said swanky bar And to add insult to injury her parents are trying to rekindle the romance sushi will never look the same which is something no 30 something woman ever wants to imagine LOL.I think Lindsey Kelk is underrated, especially by me, I never recognise her name but I loved the previous book of hers that I read We Were On a Break and this equally as charming and funny in that very British way.HIghly recommended.I received a free copy of this book from the publisher via NetGalley in return for an honest review Lindsey Kelk writes a light, bright, frothy, breezy and parents are in the throes of a midlife sexual renaissance, and have adapted the shed at the bottom of the garden for her to live in In dire financial straits and desperate to get a job, the first thing she wants is to get back with her friends that mean almost everything to her, high powered lesbian lawyer, Sumi, the married to creepy Dave and now heavily pregnant, Lucy, and her longest best friend, the financially well off Adrian Anderson After putting out a universal I m back email that in error reaches her ex boyfriend, travel writer Patrick Parker, he gets in touch For Ros, he is all she has ever wanted, okay her friends cannot stand him, but she is over the moon, rejoicing at the prospect of being back together with him Life is beginning to look good and becomes even better when she finds a job almost immediately as a producer at PodPad Her client at the company is a teen e sport megastar, the mask wearing Snazzlechuff with a huge international following It is made clear should she fail with him, she will be fired A nostalgic Ros tries to resurrect the fun and joy of her twenties, organising skating outings, and , but her friends are now in different places in their lives, and is she flogging a dead horse, trying to breathe life into her relationship with Patrick Is it time for her to move on, particularly with the entry of barowner, John, into her life Kelk writes an uplifting, warm and comic rom com that hits the mark with it s central protagonist, Ros, surrounded by a stellar supporting cast of characters, from her parents who want to renew their wedding vows, and a fabulous bunch of supportive friends who are there for her when things go wrong, or her world falls apart, whilst celebrating her successes with her This is a engaging and entertaining read, full of mayhem and misadventures, of a Ros who comes to realise she has to learn to move on from the past and confront the challenges of life s realities, and getin touch with who she is and what it is that she wants A great read to escape the troubled realities of our contemporary world Many thanks to HarperCollins for an ARC I ve been reading Lindsey Kelk for years she is without a doubt one of my all time favourite authors I have read all of her adult novels and have always really enjoyed them So much so that as soon as she announces a new novel I hit that preorder button However there s always a certain trepidation I experience whenever I embark on a new read by her Will it be as good as past novels Can she really deliver something so funny again Etc etc So it is with the greatest delight and relief tha I ve been reading Lindsey Kelk for years she is without a doubt one of my all time favourite authors I have read all of her adult novels and have always really enjoyed them So much so that as soon as she announces a new novel I hit that preorder button However there s always a certain trepidation I experience whenever I embark on a new read by her Will it be as good as past novels Can she really deliver something so funny again Etc etc So it is with the greatest delight and relief that I can say this is Lindsey s best ever novel In Case You Missed It perfectly blends comical high jinks and hilarity with true authenticity This book is a magical mixture of everything you want a fun and light hearted fiction to be with deeper moments of thought provoking honesty The book follows thirty something Ros who returns home to the U.K after living and working in America for a few years Things didn t quite work out as Ros had hoped stateside so she desperately tries to cling to the familiarity of her past twenty something lifestyle and reconnects with her ex boyfriend Patrick he who broke her heart just before she left for the U.S.A And so the book follows Ros as she tries to make sense of things Tries to find what it is in life that truly makes her happy And this could sound like a pretty run of the mill book but it is the depth of characterisation of Ros that really makes this novel shine She is one of the most realistic characters you ll ever read about in this genre Kelk has freely admitted on social media that she mined her own personal life experience for this novel and I believe you can truly tell Because there s so much here that is entirely relatable Ros self doubts and struggles are the self doubts and struggles of many of us in our quest to find what it is that will make us happy in life or indeed our search for The One Ros is an unflinchingly honest character and her connection with Patrick is one that will really get you in the feels, especially if you ve had a similar relationship in your past Theirs isn t the most equal of relationships and without wishing to spoil too much of the plot it will have you feeling frustrated, sad, mad etc because as a reader you can see the ways that Ros is twisting herself trying to be what she feels is someone worthy of his love As ever with a Lindsey Kelk book there are a wonderful cast of supporting characters in the form of Ros best friends circle of Sumi, Adrian, and Lucy Each is well differentiated and bring their own unique mini sub plot which truly adds to the enjoyment of the book Sumi was my personal favourite I loved that she had this no nonsense exterior but with the softest core for her loved ones I really just want to be her best friend I also was a big fan of Ros work related podcast storyline because it not only introduced us to possibly the best named character ever i.e the teenage YouTube star Snazzlechuff, but also to his agent babysitter Veronica whom I adored Veronica is supremely confident, snarky, and incredibly smart, and basically steals every scene she s in LOVE HER Ros parents also feature heavily in the novel as Ros is forced to move back in with themoraccurately into the shed at the bottom of their garden They provide much of the comedy of the storyline and I almost always was in stitches laughing whenever they appeared on the page Ros mum also happened to appear in my favourite scene from the book when she and Ros had a truly honest heart to heart about what being in love with another person truly means tears rolled freely down my face reading that, ALL of the feels And for those of us who are here for a dashing male character to make us swoon over Well that s provided in the form of John I loved the way he and Ros had this instant yet slow burn connection I know Instant and slow burn at once doesn t seem possible And yet that s exactly what Kelk delivered And as a cherry on top this book is sprinkled with great moments of patriarchy bashing, challenges to the narrow minded nature of heteronormativity and sparkling moments of childhood nostalgia for those of us of a certain age hello groovy chick merchandise I highly recommend this to fans of comedic fiction who like their books to have an overarching romantic themeAn e copy of this book was kindly provided to me by the publisher
