Next year I am buying this book for some of my sci fi geek friends A Lot Like Christmas is full of original Christmas stories that are not depressing It has a little bit of everything, robots, aliens, and an ecologically responsible Christmas spirit. these newer Christmas stories are all about romance or feel too sentimental or formulaic to be enjoyable for me Or they go in the opposite direction into darkness, and completely miss the point of the season hope Because of these moves in the realm of Christmas stories, I ve stayed away from newer Christmas publications and have just made due with the classics I ve read half a dozen times, and have done so for years However, this year a couple of new Christmas books caught my eye, and I decided to give them a try The first, Hiddensee A Tale of the Once and Future Nutcracker, was a severe disappointment And because of that disappointment, I almost decided not to even attempt the second book I had found The cover was what had attracted me a Christmas tree with little robot and rocket ship ornaments was an adorable choice Thankfully, I decided to go ahead and give Connie Willis s little book of short stories a try, and it was just as cute as the cover led me to believe.I had never thought to track down sci fi Christmas stories Actually, I didn t even know those were a thing Now I know better, and I am so glad I picked this book up Usually the stories that comprise anthologies are very hit or miss for me, but there was only one story that I didn t like out of twelve, and it happened to be one of the shortest The other eleven stories were all wonderful they were funny or sweet or moving or all of the above, and every single one of them managed to emphasize some important aspect of Christmas The stories featured Christmas Spirits who were environmental activists, judgemental aliens, carnivals with spiritual significance, a time traveling Holy Family, and primates with vocal implants There were mysteries, romances, and odes to Christmas choirs Every single story except for the one about a carnivorous toy shop was absolutely wonderful, and that one wasn t terrible The variety was fantastic And I loved the fact that a science fiction writer didn t belittle the spiritual roots of Christmas, but actually embraced them and emphasized Jesus inthan one story It was such a refreshing collection to find.Willis also included lists of her favorite Christmas movies and stories and tv series episodes, with a brief explanation of why she loves each I now have a whole list of things to check out next year, at which point I ll definitely be rereading this little collection In the meantime, I plan to track down some of Willis sfamous books and give them a read, because I really appreciate her style of storytelling If you re ever in the mood for some unconventional Christmas tales, don t hesitate to pick up this collection It may be a day late, but Merry Christmas, everyone Original review can be found at Booknest. #EBOOK × A Lot I think All Seated On the Ground certainly rivals them Connie Willis is one of the few writers out there that I will read anything by without knowing anything about the story Her name alone is good enough for me And like everything she writes, this collection of Christmas stories is great reading I loved every tale in this collection These were all small gems that I treasured greatly You will love these tales even if you are not in the Christmas spirit, for they are all just wonderful science fiction tales in the own right A great collection. I DNF d this at 41% I DNF d it in the middle of a story I found Willis way to evoke emotion very cheap and lazy and the whole collection felt trite I went into this expecting to read feel good Christmas stories and instead I got really mad in almost every single one of them In fact, the only story I liked was Pony, which wasn t even in this collection. You d think a book such as this would make you sick of Christmas long before you finish it but not so in this case Even at over 500 pages Willis manages to come up with fresh ideas Though all the stories have have a strong Holiday theme they include other interesting themes as well Another strong element is humor, there s nothing maudlin or over sentimental but don t think your heart strings are 100% safe There are a few tears that sneak out through the laughter. There are classic stories wi You d think a book such as this would make you sick of Christmas long before you finish it but not a prominence of Dickens, there are science fiction and fantasy stories, they re set in the current time and in the past I don t know about you but I m one of those people who don t want to hear about Christmas except for a few weeks of the year however I had zero gage reflex reading this big enjoyable helping of stories I m in awe that Willis could come up with so many fresh Holiday stories.Thank you to the publisher for providing an advance reader s copy I thoroughly enjoyed this book I love Christmas and this collection of Christmas stories had a blend of everything humor, love, capers, dancers, and plenty of Christmas spirit Being a science fiction fan, I also enjoyed the sci fi fantasy addition to the topic, including an alien invasion and time travel.Naturally, I liked some the collection included plenty of references to the same movie just to keep me giggling. One of the stories about the Rockettes saving a robot s Christmas had me crying at the end unbelievably and I really enjoyed the Inn, which included an act of kindness and time travel and gave me goosebumps. All in all, this was a fun book and got me into the Christmas spirit Recommended True rating 4.5 stars I know I am a bit late to the party I read it in the week before Christmas, but then I got sidetracked by all the parties and fun , but I recommend Connie Willis collection of short stories as one of the best ways to get in the mood for the Holidays, to reawaken the spirit of Christmas It is most of all great fun and a great resource for further reading, watching the relevant movies and listening mistletoe it s a parasite, you know, it kills the treesScience fiction has always had the ability to make us look at the world from a different angle, and Christmas is no exception Yes, some of the stories have a science fiction angle, but this isin the way of a pretext for a Christmas caper The actual link between the stories for me is the fact that almost without exception they are inspired and constructed from one of the classics of literature or cinema, with an unusual twist or two thrown in And all of them encourage us to rediscover the true meaning of the celebration and to be merry Yes, there is a lot of tragedy in the world and the retailers are going crazy trying to sell us stuff, but Christmas is a celebration of new life, new beginnings and hope for the futureI just think the celebration of Christmas should retain some connection to the original meaning Good will toward men Kindness, sharing, forgiveness, loveMiracle is set in a big city company where a young woman is wishing her sexy boss would notice her at the office party what it actually is is a lively debate about which is The Greatest Christmas Movie Ever Made with a eco warrior Save the Planet guardian angel thrown in What is your choice between It s a Wonderful Life and Miracle on 34th Street All About Emily is a riff on the classic All About Eve with some Artificial Intelligence debate thrown in and with a history lesson about the greatest chorus line in America Inn is about the rehearsals in church for a Christmas spectacle, complete with choir singing carols and local kids acting the nativity scene But would these people recognize Jesus today and welcome him if he were to come knocking at the door Or would they call Homeland Security to deport him All Seated on the Ground is again including the singing of Christmas carols in Denver, but this time the audience is coming from another planet This is probably my favorite story in the collectionI d always said that if and when the aliens actually landed, it would be a letdown I mean, after War of the Worlds , Close Encounters , and E.T , there was no way they could live up to their image in the public mind, good or bad With these three movies as a guideline, Connie Willis manages to cram in some romantic comedy, alien communication difficulties and a Christmas concerto for a multitude of voices In Coppelius s Toyshop is one of the few stories included here that left me a bit underwhelmed Its themes are the movie Home Alone , the Nutcracker and predatory men who hunt for vulnerable single mothers Adaptation is set in a bookstore, a perfect setting to discuss the history of Christmas, consumerism and how a classic story can survive the modern ethos The story in question is the one that invented the celebration according to some sources Charles Dickens A Christmas Carol How many new versions are you aware of Personally, I confess I haven t read it yet, just like one of the characters in the storyGemma knows the story, though, in spite of never having read it, and the name of all the characters, as does everyonebut do you also know its messageScrooges are praised and much rewarded for their greed Present had said, and so they were, with Savile Row suits and knighthoods and Majorca No wonder the spirits had fallen on hard times The narrator, a divorced father trying desperately to spend some quality time with his daughter over Christmas yet forced to work overtime to promote a bestseller about getting rich quick, is seeing the actual ghosts from the Dickens story In a bustling metropolis New York nobody pays attention to them any There s still hope, thoughYou are a reader, too he said eagerly I find books a great comfort, I said, and he noddeddeck.halls boughs holly is about a dystopian future where all the business is transacted online, you can order anything you fancy included an event organizer to design you a custom Christmas party from a catalog of hundreds of templates, mostly from movies but also historical, political, musical, etc This is an expensive way to impress your neighbors, and original themes are in high demand and thin on the ground, just like original Hollywood scripts Nobody seems to want a classical Christmas theme. The movie references here are a riot, but what I wrote down is a tip about a short story where people no longer feel the need to interact directly with one another The Machine Stops by E M Forster Cat s Paw is a murder mystery in the tradition of Agatha Christie, Arthur Conan Doyle and Dorothy Sayers The greatest detective in the world Touffet and his trusty sidekick Colonel Bridlings are invited to spend Christmas at a British country manor A murder will probably soon ensue The original part of the story has to do with animal intelligence, in particular gorillas who function as servants in the manor Now Showing is my other favorite here, probably because Connie Willis sets free her movie geek persona, something I m very familiar with In another dystopian setting whose seeds are already planted, terrorism has led to small cinemas closing down, to be replaced by huge malls with total surveillance installations and hundreds of cinema halls The only problem is the penury of original movies, leading to endless reboots and sequels The inspiration for the crime caper story is clearly identified in the text by the movies the girl and her unreliable ruffian of a boyfriend mention Jumpin Jack Flash , Charade , How To Steal A Million , I Love Trouble , Ghost Town and so onUnlike theirs, my afternoon had been great It had everything adventure, suspense, romance, explosions, danger, snappy dialogue, kissing scene the perfect Saturday afternoon at the moviesNewsletter is about how tiring big families are sometimes over the holidays, especially when you are a single woman and have nothing special to say in the newsletter everybody is expecting you to send over Christmas, detailing your achievements from the previous year As a movie reference we have here Invasion of the Body Snatchers Aliens again Hell, yeah Epiphany is inspired by the greatest Christmas story ever told Not the Dickens one, I already mentioned that The original oneepiphany is the word for the arrival of the wise men at the manger Just like in Francois Truffaut s Close Encounters of the Third Kind , a bunch of people from all sort of backgrounds are hearing in their mind a call to go west towards an unknown destination, right into the teeth of a violent blizzard This one hasbiblical than movie references, with a priest as the main actorCome, my friends, tis not too late to seek a newer worldTennyson Just Like the Ones We Used to Know is about snow and about global warming and about how many different renditions of the song White Christmas do you know How many times do you think it gets airtime during the month of December What if somebody up there hears our desire and grants us a truly white Christmas a final word don t forget to check out the appendix with the best movies to watch and the best books to read in December. Thanks for putting a big smile on my face, Mrs Willis I ve always been a big fan of Connie Willis and so I couldn t really find any fault in reading an actual Christmas story or stories EVEN on XMAS if it was coming from her Sometimes you ve simply got to pick your battles, and Connie Willis is like the John Mclaine of Xmas Stories.I m not saying she strangles Xmas with a chain or uses wildly inappropriate western sayings I mean, she could, I m sure, but that isn t what happens here She might get a bit angry at It s a Wonderful Life, however, I ve always been a big fan of Connie Willis and so I couldn t really find any fault in reading an actual Christmas story or stories EVEN on one thing I love most about these is how Connie Willis s storytelling skill is nearly perfect no matter the sub genre she twists it I mean, these Xmas stories are all genuinely uplifting while avoiding sentimentality, very critical and humorous in equal amounts, and a great number of them are filled with the dead or futuristic worlds or even a murder mystery involving apes Yes, apes Merry Xmas Above all, every one of these stories is easy as hell to read, are down to earth, full of fantastic human consequences, and is full to the brim with humor I won t say that any of them are knock down brilliant but in terms of reading a master storyteller who knows her craft and has well researched probably EVERYTHING about Xmas from stories to movies to poetry from a lifelong obsession, she can t be beat She covers all the angles, from dark revenge stories to romantic comedies to murder mysteries to time and space traveling Aramaic speakers to aliens in a hunt for JUST THE RIGHT GREETING to a VERY white Xmas And I have to agree with her It s a Wonderful Life is FLAWED as hell I never read the other collection of Xmas stories, which might be a blessing in disguise Even so, there are five new ones in this book Either way, it doesn t really matter I can read her stuff all day long Thanks to Netgalley for the ARC
