I can t believe I read this massive heavy book in just over a week The Gelbs devoted their lives to researching and writing about Eugene O Neill, and still managed to have careers Mr Gelb died before the publication of this book and his widow had to carry on alone It s an incredible look into the role women, starting with O Neill s mother, played in his life Several in depth analyses of his plays, almost all containing autobiographical information A must for O Neill scholars I wonder how time will value his work it seems already diminished in some sense I want to go back and find some of his plays on dvd. Ambitious gossip Exuberantthe book soars Thank you for my free Goodreads copy O Neill s life and personality reminded me of Ernest Hemingway s He wanted his women to take care of him and to be there when he wanted them to be there He even had a flirtation in old age with a young girl who he wished to marry, like Hemingway did with Adriana Ivancich.
